Kid CheckupChoosing a Pediatrician

A pediatrician who is a good fit for your family is an important decision because you are building a partnership for guiding your parenting decisions regarding your child's health care that, unless life takes you to another geographical setting, may last for many years to come.

First of all, why choose a pediatrician for your child's health care? There are differences between pediatricians and family practitioners, and it is important that you determine what factors are most important to you before choosing your child's doctor. Pediatricians have more extensive training in and experience with children's health issues than any other type of doctor. Furthermore, children tend to visit doctors far more often than adults, so choosing someone who specialized in their care can be valuable.

To be sure, any pediatrician you choose should be board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Barton is board certified (see Qualifications) and takes part in Continuing Medical Education to stay up-to-date with current practices in medicine.

Chidren's CheckupThe availability of your pediatrician will become very important to you.  Dr. Barton makes a point of reserving room in his schedule each day to see those of his patients who are sick. He will not accept so many scheduled checkups that there is not room for you when you need him.  In addition, Dr. Barton makes every effort to see his patients in a timely manner, knowing that no parent likes to sit in the waiting room with an unhappy or sick child.

In order for this partnership to be most effective, you must have confidence in your child's doctor. You should feel comfortable discussing any issues with the doctor and be able to trust that he or she is acting in the best interest of your child.  Complimentary "meet the doctor" visits are an excellent way to get to know Dr. Barton before your baby is born or before his or her first visit. Feel free to bring a list of questions or specific concerns. Otherwise, Dr. Barton's visits usually encompass topics such as:
  • Getting to know your family
  • Qualifications and experience
  • Office policies regarding questions, appointments, after-hours calls, availability
  • Hospital affiliations
  • Medical issues such as breast feeding, immunizations, antibiotics
  • Behavioral issues such as ADD/ADHD, school concerns, adolescent issues
  • Insurance policies
  • Any other questions you may have

Other environmental factors can make your visits to the doctor more comfortable as well. Dr. Barton's waiting room is very kid friendly, with movies, books and a fun fish tank to keep them occupied. In addition, a special sick waiting room is available for those who might be contagious, and care is taken to sanitize this room between patients.  Ample parking is also available.

If you would like to meet Dr. Barton, simply call the office for a free interview. He is always happy to be introduced to prospective patients and answer any questions you might have.  If you have just relocated to the area and your kids need to see him right away, give us a call and our helpful office staff will help you work out the details.  We look forward to meeting you!
